What Is a Crown?

A crown replaces the visible part of a tooth. It is a cap made of metal and/or porcelain that fits exactly over a prepared tooth or molar and is cemented in place. A porcelain crown has the natural appearance of a real tooth and is an excellent solution for damaged, discoloured, or broken teeth.

When Should You Get a Crown?

A crown is needed when a tooth is too weak or damaged to function properly on its own. This can be due to:

  • Broken or damaged teeth: For example, after a fall or accident.

  • Severely worn teeth: Often caused by teeth grinding or long-term wear.

  • Weakened teeth after root canal treatment: A tooth can become brittle after such a procedure and may need extra protection.

  • Part of a bridge: Crowns can be used as supports for a bridge to replace missing teeth.

A crown restores your tooth’s function and appearance. Our crowns are indistinguishable from natural teeth, providing both strength and a natural smile.

How Is a Crown Placed?

A crown treatment at Dental Care Utrecht usually involves two appointments:

First appointment: Preparing the tooth

  • The dentist files down a small part of the tooth to make space for the crown.

  • An impression of your teeth is taken to ensure a perfect fit.

  • A temporary crown is placed to protect your tooth until the permanent crown is ready.

Second appointment: Fitting the crown

  • The permanent crown is custom-made in our dental laboratory.

  • Once ready, the crown is securely cemented in place.

  • After a quick check, you can eat and drink as normal.

The entire process typically takes around two weeks, depending on your situation.

The Difference Between a Crown and a Bridge

A crown is a single tooth restoration placed over an existing tooth to strengthen it. A bridge consists of multiple crowns joined together to replace one or more missing teeth. This is an ideal solution if you are missing teeth but do not wish to have an implant.

Bridge Treatment

Before placing a bridge, certain preparatory treatments may be needed, such as fillings, root canal treatment, or implant placement. Sometimes a post or core build-up is required to strengthen the supporting teeth.

For an implant-supported bridge, the dentist places a post into the implant. An impression is taken, your bite is recorded, and the colour is matched to your natural teeth. The bridge may be made by the dentist or by a dental technician.

A temporary bridge is placed to protect your teeth until the permanent one is ready. Once completed, the bridge is fitted, checked, and cemented in place.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a crown or bridge cost?

The cost depends on:

  • Material used (porcelain, metal-ceramic, or zirconia)

  • Complexity of the procedure

  • Laboratory costs for manufacturing the crown or bridge

  • Any preparatory treatments, such as root canal therapy

We provide a personalised cost estimate during your consultation.

Is a crown covered by insurance?

Crowns are not covered under basic health insurance in the Netherlands. Supplementary dental insurance may offer partial reimbursement, check with your provider.

Can a crown break?

Crowns are very strong, but in rare cases they can break under extreme pressure. If this happens, the crown can be replaced.

Is getting a crown painful?

No. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, so you will not feel anything during tooth preparation or crown placement. Some mild sensitivity afterwards is normal and usually disappears within a few days.

How should I care for a crown?

  • Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste

  • Use floss or interdental brushes to clean around the crown

  • Avoid very hard or sticky foods, such as nuts or toffees

Does the treatment involve multiple appointments?

Yes. Crowns are typically placed in two visits: one for preparation and impressions, and one for placement.

What should I expect after treatment?

Your tooth may be temporarily sensitive to hot or cold drinks, but this will fade. You can eat and drink normally straight after the procedure.
