What is Endodontics?

Endodontics is the field of dentistry that focuses on diseases of the dental pulp (the inner chamber containing the tooth nerve). Every tooth contains pulp – living tissue made up of nerve fibres and blood vessels. Each tooth has one or more root canals.

  • An incisor typically has one root and therefore one root canal.

  • A molar usually has two or three roots, sometimes even four, with an equal number of canals.

An endodontist is a dentist who has specialised in performing endodontic treatments – such as root canal therapy – using advanced tools like a microscope.

When Do You Need Endodontic Treatment?

Do you recognise these symptoms?

  • Pain when chewing

  • Sensitivity to hot or cold drinks

  • Throbbing toothache

These signs often indicate an inflamed tooth nerve or an infection in the root canal. Our endodontists can resolve the issue and help ensure it doesn’t return.

Why a Root Canal Treatment?

A root canal (also called nerve treatment) is necessary when the root canal of your tooth becomes infected. This can result from tooth decay, a leaking or deep filling, or trauma from a blow to the tooth. Once the nerve becomes inflamed and dies, bacteria can cause an infection at the tip of the root. Without treatment, the tooth may eventually be lost.

How is a Root Canal Treatment Performed?

With local anaesthesia, a root canal treatment can be performed painlessly. Through a small opening in the tooth, the endodontist cleans and disinfects the root canals. The canals are then filled and sealed with a filling to prevent reinfection. At Dental Care Utrecht, we ensure you know exactly what to expect and that you feel comfortable throughout the process.

Step 1: X-rays

We begin with dental X-rays to locate the infection and plan the best treatment.

Step 2: Anaesthesia

We start with local anaesthesia so you can relax and remain pain-free.

Step 3: Opening the Tooth

A small opening is made in the tooth to access the infected tissue.

Step 4: Cleaning & Filling

The canal is carefully cleaned, disinfected, and filled to prevent bacteria from returning. The tooth is then sealed with a temporary or permanent filling.

    More Than Just Root Canals

Endodontics covers more than you might think. In addition to root canal therapy, this specialty includes:

    • Apical surgery (apicoectomy): Removing the root tip and infected tissue.

    • Pulp capping: Protecting damaged or exposed pulp tissue.

    • Dental trauma treatment: Restoring teeth after injury or damage.

    • Root canal retreatment: Correcting previous treatments that did not fully resolve the problem.
