Gnathology in Utrecht

What is Gnathology?

Gnathology comes from the Greek word gnathos, meaning “jaw.” A dental gnathologist is a dentist who specialises in conditions such as facial pain, problems with the chewing muscles and joints, tooth wear, and sleep disorders. These conditions may sometimes occur simultaneously and can worsen each other. Certain oral habits, such as clenching and grinding, can also play a role in these issues.

When is Gnathology the Right Solution?

You can book an appointment with our gnathologist if you suffer from any of the following symptoms:

  • Facial pain
  • Headaches
  • Jaw pain: pain in the chewing muscles and/or jaw joints (also called TMD, see below)
  • Difficulty opening your mouth
  • Sounds in the jaw joint (such as clicking or popping)
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • Toothache without a known cause, or caused by clenching/grinding

Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD)

The symptoms listed above can be part of the broader term TMD. In short, these are complaints caused by problems with the chewing muscles and/or jaw joints. This often results from overloading these structures – literally “biting off more than you can chew”. Stress, anxiety, depression, and certain personality traits can play a role aswell. The cause of TMD is multifactorial (biological, psychological, and social). That’s why our treatment approach addresses all these aspects, with the goal of providing long-term relief from your symptoms.

Treatment Process with Our Gnathologist

1. Filling in Questionnaires

Before your appointment, you will receive questionnaires to map out your symptoms and other relevant factors.

2. Intake Appointment

The intake – longer than a standard dental check-up – involves a detailed discussion of your symptoms and possible causes with the dental gnathologist. Based on this, a diagnosis can often be made, and a personalised treatment plan created.

3. Treatment & Multidisciplinary Team

In some cases, treatment from multiple specialists is needed. We work within a multidisciplinary team in Utrecht, including orofacial physiotherapists and psychologists. You may be referred to these specialists during your treatment.

4. Follow-up & Evaluation

Throughout the treatment, you will have follow-up appointments with the gnathologist to monitor progress and adjust the plan if needed.
